lions1Since it was formed in 1996, the Prospect Road Lions Club has made a world of difference to many residents in Goodwood, Hatchet Lake, Brookside, Whites Lake, Terence Bay, Lower Prospect, Prospect, Prospect Bay, Shad Bay, Bayside, Blind Bay, McGrath’s Cove & East and West Dover.

The Club currently has 15 members – women and men with widely ranging ages, backgrounds and interests – who meet regularly at the Whites Lake Legion on Prospect Road to discuss new and ongoing opportunities to serve our region.

Our numerous activities include the Lions Canada Day Family Celebration, a Seniors Christmas Dinner and running BBQs for the sponsors of various community events. The Canada Day event provides a family-friendly opportunity to celebrate confederation and usually attracts between 500 and 1,000 people.

In addition to a popular bicycle competition, the Club puts on free games with gifts for the children, and runs a hot-dog BBQ and refreshment tent. The annual seniors dinner, in conjunction with Whites Lake Legion on Prospect Road, is typically attended by more than 220 people.

multi-cup-cafe-1On Friday, November 20, 2009, I had the opportunity to visit Multi Cup Café and was welcomed by a lovely lady by the name of Diane.  The feel when I walked in was very warm and inviting.  I was excited to be sitting down in our very own coffee shop in Hatchet Lake to enjoy a dark roast and a morning glory muffin.

I was meeting one of the owners of Multi Cup, Larry Morash, (partner Peter Warren) and I couldn’t think of a better place than the Multi Cup Café.  Following is how our meeting played out:

Good morning Larry and Thank You for taking time to meet with me this morning over coffee.

Q:    Do you live in the community of Hatchet Lake?
A:    I grew up in West Dover until I was 16 or 17 years of age and then moved to the city.  I moved back 6 years ago and I live in Brookside now.

Q:    What inspired you to open a coffee shop in this community?
A:    Well, the Multi Scoop was seasonal and I didn’t want it to close down for the winter so I thought it would be a good idea to open a coffee shop and offer both services to the community.

Q:    Did you do a community assessment?  If so , how was that carried out?
A:    Not really.  Basically, conversations and feedback from at Multi Tech Automotive was enough for me to consider a Multi Scoop and Multi Cup.

My Lil Package Baby Boutique(www.mylilpackage.ca) is the newest online baby store to hit HRM. It began as a dream only a few short months ago for owner, Lynn Worthen. What started out as a thought has turned into a thriving online baby boutique in a few short months.

Back in the early Spring of 2009, Lynn started out as an independent rep for another children’s company that was based out in Calgary. While it seemed like a great idea at the time, Lynn wanted more. Being a mom to a toddler, and knowing the struggles of finding the time to go shopping, she wanted to be able to provide an online presence that focused more on Canadian made, organic, unique and eco-friendly products that were not found in the bigger box stores.

Each of the store’s items is carefully chosen by Lynn herself. She offers free local pickup to those that want to make the trek to Hatchet Lake and of course will mail out all other orders across North America for a fair shipping cost. It gets even better with FREE SHIPPING anytime with orders over $150.

Anna Chow and Marilyn McAvoy bring a very interesting skill set to the 14th Annual Craft Crawl.

AandMAnna is widely known for her abilities as a clothing designer and as a seamstress, her Chinese cooking, and now she has ventured into the realm of jewelry making. She started making jewelry for her friends and family but her interest and output created the situation where she had an oversupply and last year she sold some of her material at the Craft Crawl. Since then she has been supplying some gift shops with her creations.

Her interest and output continued and once again she will be offering her newest jewelry designs. She makes rings, necklaces, broaches, bracelets and earrings and works with beads, semi precious stones, crystal, sterling sliver wire and pure silver.

As a bonus this year, and by popular demand, a limited supply of her “famous” egg rolls will be available for sale at the Craft Crawl.

Marilyn is an artist who has worked on such projects as the movie “Titanic” where her creations were viewed and acclaimed internationally. She teaches drawing at NASCAD and has returned to an old hobby for her, knitting. She has developed some truly innovative new products. One of the most popular is a mohair wool hat that converts into a neck warmer or a head band. They are called “Toggle Hats” and once you see one, you will marvel at the genius of the design. This product is in high demand. She also does leg warmers and fingerless gloves. Her mix of colour and patterns is her trademark and some of her designs are in demand and for sale in local shops.

This material will be available at the “House of A and M”, the location is detailed in the Craft Crawl Brochure and at www.craftcrawl.prospectcommunities.com
