Environmental Home Assessment Program

The Environmental Home Assessment Program (EHAP) is available in all areas of Nova Scotia until March 31, 2012. Homeowners with onsite septic systems and private wells can request a free environmental home assessment by calling 1-800-500-3427. The service is funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and delivered by non-profit organizations providing environmental education. Homeowners can contact Clean Nova Scotia at 1-800-665-5377 to book your FREE assessment in HRM, Hants, Guysborough, Antigonish, Pictou Cumberland, Colchester counties. During the EHAP assessment, Clean Nova Scotia staff will meet with the homeowner at their home for approximately and hour and a half. The homeowner will receive information on how to manage their septic system and well water quality and how to inspect their oil tank. All information obtained during an EHAP assessment is confidential. Home owners who participate in the EHAP assessment are eligible for a $100 septic tank pumping rebate. Those who meet certain eligibility criteria may also apply for a grant of up to $3,000 from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment’s Septic Repair Grant Program. What is Off the Hook? Off the Hook is a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) cooperative started by 5 fishermen from the Digby area with support from the Ecology Action Centre. It aims to connect people with the fish they eat and the people who catch it. What is a CSF? A Community Supported Fishery (CSF) works the same as the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) model: subscribers pay a fee at the beginning of the season for a weekly share of food (in this case, fish). Through a CSF, subscribers buy their fish directly from the people who catch it- there are no middlemen. Fishermen get a fair price for their catch, and subscribers get fresh, sustainably caught fish. What type of fish do I get? During the summer months, most of the fish provided by Off the Hook fishermen is haddock, with the occasional hake & ocean pollock. The fish are generally 2 to 3 pounds each. It's Community Clean Up Time Again

The 2011 Prospect Road Community Clean Up this Saturday, April 30th! The event will be held on April 30th in various communities that make up the Prospect Road. You can join in a group already working in an area or choose your own area that needs some care and attention. Groups can choose their own start times and locations for the morning. Please take part, meet your neighbours and contribute to your communities. Below is a list of groups, locations and times we are aware of.   HRM is seeking public input on the draft Master Plan for the Western Common Wilderness Common. The Western Common is situated between Highway 103 and Highway 333 (Prospect Road) extending west from the Ragged Lake Business Park to the area around Nine Mile River.The Wilderness Common is a proposed 1600 hectare portion of the Western Common that will become a Regional Park.
